Put simply, the ask and bid determine stock price. When a buyer and seller come together, a trade is executed, and the price at which the trade occurred becomes the quoted market value. In a two-for-one split, for example, each share becomes two, and the cost basis is cut in half. Reinvested dividends, on the other hand, are added to the cost basis.
