Microbial oil recovery techniques

The research on Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR), which uses microbes to recover oil, has been underway for about 70 years. Whether MEOR is practical and cost effective way to recover a portion of the oil that is trapped in global oil fields is beginning to get answered.

The “ultimate” application of microbiological methods to oil recovery would be to inoculate the reservoirs with microorganisms which would convert the oil to either a more readily recoverable lower viscosity oil or to a gas. The prospect for the development of such a system was placed in the long-range category. Microbiological Treatment introduces specific micro-organisms to an oil field which metabolise some of the hydrocarbon, in turn producing byproducts which assist in oil recovery. These bi-products include solvents, acids, alcohols, bio-polymers, bio-surfactants and gasses. Microbial enhanced oil recovery is a low-priced and eco-friendly technology which could potentially increase the ultimate oil recovery. Unfortunately, despite drastic advantages of this technology, it is still not fully supported due to lack of field test data and the perceived process complexity. During primary recovery, the natural pressure of the reservoir or gravity drive oil into the wellbore, combined with artificial lift techniques (such as pumps) which bring the oil to the surface. But only about 10 percent of a reservoir's original oil in place is typically produced during primary recovery.

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is a type of enhanced oil recovery (EOR ) MEOR (BS-MEOR) could be applied by either in-situ or ex-situ techniques. The research on Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR), which uses microbes to recover oil, has been underway for about 70 years. Whether MEOR is practical and cost effective way to recover a portion of the oil that is trapped in global oil fields is beginning to get answered. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is a biological based technology consisting in manipulating function or structure, or both, of microbial environments existing in oil reservoirs. The ultimate aim of MEOR is to improve the recovery of oil entrapped in porous media while increasing economic profits. ABSTRACT-Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) is a tertiary oil recovery technique that employs the use of microbes and their byproduct to enhance residual oil mobilization in the reservoir . This work considers MEOR technology application based on economic, technological and environmental stand point as against other EOR techniques. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the technologies that has received significant attention over the past several decades. Its advantages versus other enhanced oil recovery processes include reduced energy requirements versus thermal methods–such as steam flooding–and reduced chemical costs compared with chemical methods–such as polymer or alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding. We believe that ME-1 has the potential to improve the recovery of oil/gas with very low capitol investment and a much smaller environmental footprint compared to other EOR techniques. Its advantages versus other enhanced oil recovery processes include reduced energy requirements versus thermal methods–such as steam flooding–and reduced chemical costs compared with chemical methods–such as polymer or alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding. Microbial enhanced oil recovery represents a three-pronged attack. First, the microorganisms break down crude oil, reducing its viscosity. It's a lot easier to drive it hundreds of feet upward if flows more like water than maple syrup. The second method is displacement. Advantages of microbial enhanced oil recovery will drive the microbial enhanced oil recovery market The production process of crude oil is being optimized by employing several recovery techniques including thermal methods, gas injection, and chemical injection.
